Inspired by the International Olympic Games, the inaugural Empire State Games took place at Syracuse University in 1978. The competitive events mirrored those of the Olympic Summer Games and NY was the first state to organize & hold such a competition.
The Empire State Winter Games came into being not long afterwards and benefited from the marvelous facilities created in the Lake Placid area for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
One of the really special things about working here at Titus is the opportunity to watch folks who have never experienced our sport come out & try it for the first time. This is especially true when it involves youngsters!
The late start to this season has just naturally created a lot of carping & hand-wringing among those of us who are eager to feed our hunger. Fortunately, the last couple of weeks have brought welcome relief as Mother Nature has finally decided to come to the party with colder temperatures & some of her own homebrew too.
This year the East Coast has had record-breaking weather, and not in a way that makes snow-lovers happy. Titus Mountain, along with other east coast ski resorts, have seen little to no natural snow and temperatures too high to make the white gold.
Though the prolific group Five for Fighting sings, “Love can’t change the weather,” it doesn’t stop (and hasn’t stopped) skier and snowboarders from doing everything in their power to bring the pow. Whether we are worshipping the Farmer’s Almanac (who are those guys anyways?) to praying to snow deities to performing snow dances, there are many legends and rituals that are out there.
Are you looking to bring the snow? To get you started, we’re sharing a list of some interesting folklore, mythology, and plain prayers to bring the snow.
A new brand, new events, new logo, new website. Welcome to the 2016 Empire State Winter Games (ESWG), set for February 4-7 in the Adirondack region.
Event organizers met at Titus Mountain in Malone, N.Y., a new ESWG venue, on Tuesday, December 1 to unveil plans that have been in discussion for several years and marks a significant turning point in what is already the largest community-supported collection of athletic games in the nation.
Can you believe that the Holiday Season is just around the corner?! If you're looking to get your favorite home-away-from-home (e.g. us!) a little something for the season, feel free to give us a few snow dances in our honor. But, if you're looking for the perfect gift for others on your "Nice" list, Titus has you covered. Forget the same-old boring gifts like plastic toys that will break in a few days (batteries not included) and technology that will be obsolete in a few months. This year, give a gift of wonder that will keep on giving! Skiers, riders, tubers, or even bar-loungers and never-evers, we have something for everyone on your list!
It’s the day before Halloween and you are at a big box store staring helplessly at the ravaged shelves of what’s left for Halloween costumes. The only thing left to choose from is the ripped open bag for a pirate—but you did that last year—and the “Sexy Pizza Rat”—but it’s two sizes too small.
Never fear! There is nothing a little DIY, hot glue, and rummaging through your ski and snowboard closet can’t do to help you win the costume contest that you’ve just been *this close* to winning for the past 6 years. Put all that gear to use. Plus, it's a great way to make sure it all still fits before the snow starts flying!
Personally, for better or for worse, I’ve spent over half of a century of winters wearing ski boots. The boots (just like the sport) have changed remarkably through those years, but two things have always remained the same:
One of the most exciting times of year here at Titus Mountain is when we roll-out the snow guns and start building big piles of the stuff. I have a great view of this action from my office window and I can tell you that watching it never get’s old. As the piles grow higher, I can just feel the anticipation of the coming season get stronger & stronger. It’s great!
Ah, the smell of Autumn. It means lots of things in the ski industry… from the return of Old Man Winter to the literal “crunch” we can hear in our calendars as we prepare to get the lifts turning. But one of the best parts about Autumn before the snow starts to fly? Ski Show season! For Titus Mountain, it means heading out to Toronto, Ottawa, and Albany to meet up with some of our favorite fans to meeting new ones. With Toronto just around the corner, we thought it might be fun to give some of our fans who we plan on seeing at the ski shows some insider tips!
