"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
While ski season might be over on the East Coast, it’s never too late (or too early) to read up on some ski tips. And in honor of Earth Day, how about some sustainable skiing advice? Many ski resorts are making strides in becoming more environmentally friendly, so let’s do our part as well!
Whoever decided that the middle of winter was the best time for a holiday all about romance wasn’t in their right minds. For those lucky enough to have that special someone, there’s just something not so romantic about runny noses and chapped lips. And for the singletons out there, you’re already aware that you crave snuggling up to someone in the cold winter months. You don’t need a reminder.
However, through all the pains that is Valentine’s Day, there is no better place to spend your day than on the slopes. From being in the midst of a budding romance to being in a happily committed relationship, here is how you make the most of V-Day on the slopes.
"It's never too cold in Chicago. You're just underdressed." A quote that can be attributed to Neil Steinburg, a columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, it's more than likely been muttered a few times on the ski slopes as well. Seasoned ski veterans know that cold weather brings great skiing and that proper preparation ensures a great ski day. But if you're just starting to get into the sport, starting to bring your little ones out onto the hill, or are skiing for the first time in a different area, here are some tips to stave off the cold and get some good turns in.
Personally, for better or for worse, I’ve spent over half of a century of winters wearing ski boots. The boots (just like the sport) have changed remarkably through those years, but two things have always remained the same:
Today is International Left Handers Day! Being left handed isn’t an amazing rarity; in fact 13% of the population is left-handed [source]! However, despite 1 in 10 people sporting left hand dominance, any leftie can tell you that they are living in an overwhelmingly right-handed world.
Most people realize that things like scissors and can openers are made for those with right hand dominance, but there are a myriad of other objects that are strange to use or just downright irritating for left handers. Rulers, spiral notebooks, knives, and even pens are all made for right handed users. While some of our staff was at a conference in California, there was even a novelty store, Lefty’s, where all products were made specifically for lefties (we picked up a few things for our staff and loved ones!).
So, you’re looking at your window and see mounds of snow and have always wanted to try skiing… but you turn on the news and hear that a lift ticket to VAIL COSTS $159!?! You think to yourself, “Oh no, skiing is way too expensive and is certainly not the sport for me.”
We’re here to tell you that you thought wrong! Deciding not to ski because you think it is too expensive is like deciding not to eat out because it’s too expensive and that’s just silly. Just like you can choose to go to different tiers of restaurants and get an entrée for $10 or $100, ski resorts are exactly the same! You can ski at a wonderful local hill for $20 or jet off to an extravagant resort for $200—the choice is yours!
