DO come to the beginning of the show. The early bird gets the worm. It’s especially true when it comes to ski shows. Showing up on the first day rather than the last day ensures that you are going to walk away with what each booth intended you to. Sometimes on the last day of the show we run out of things… stickers, pamphlets, etc. You are also going to get the best information! We’re bright, chipper, and ready to get this event started. The last day? We’re ready to go home, see our families, and sleep in our own beds. Additional Insider Tip: On long shows, the second day is one of the best days to come. Sometimes magazines aren’t printed or delivered in time… sometimes we forgot our extension cord or tables at home… and on the second day we’ve gotten our booths set-up on point!
DON’T just hit your hometown favorite and call it a day. Sure, so-and-so is our favorite mountain (and we’re just going to go ahead and assume that Titus is your favorite mountain!). But there is so much being offered at ski shows! From great discounts for beginners to awesome ski & stay packages, discounted gear to knowledgeable industry staff, ski shows are chock full of people ready to chat with you about pretty much everything and anything. So make sure you stop at your favorite booth, but get your money’s worth for the day!
DO ask us questions. We want to share information with you! Ask us about our mountain if you’ve never been. Ask us if we’ve changed this policy or that one from previous years. See what’s new and exciting and different for the upcoming season. The more excited you are, the more excited we are. Chances are we will also remember you and if we see you on the mountain can give you some additional tips that pertain to that day such as the best trails or food or lesson.
DON’T do the “arm sweep” of free goodies. We like to give things away because obviously it makes you think about our mountain even after you leave. But don’t take 10 of everything from every booth you visit. When you carry around 5 bags of free goodies you stick out like a sore thumb… and chances are other booths will put away their awesome goodies and you’ll be left with a crinkled pamphlet to take.
DO sign up for free giveaways. By now, everyone knows that usually signing up for a free giveaway means that you’ll get an email of some sort from whichever booth you signed up with. But here’s the tip—still do it! Yes, people actually win the stuff they are giving away. And yes, you can unsubscribe from the emails that you get. Legally there has to be an “unsubscribe” button at the bottom of them. Even other exhibitors drop their business cards to sign-up for the giveaways. We like free stuff too!
DON’T be afraid to say “no thank you.” You won’t hurt our feelings! It’s our job to say hello and talk to you. Sometimes we do it because people are nervous to ask us a question and we are starting the conversation. Sometimes we do it because you look like an interesting person to talk to and we’re bored. Don’t feel awkward about it!
DO check out the show website or social media beforehand. Proper planning prevents pitifully poor performance... that's what my technology teacher always said! Check out the website beforehand for a list of vendors but also for the planned giveaway, contests, and more!
