It’s a tradition that has been happening on the slopes of Titus for over 35 years—the annual Oktoberfest. You might have seen the posters or heard from a friend or saw the event on Facebook. You might have thought “what a great idea” or “I wish I had gone” or “that event might not be for me.”
Whatever you have though in the past, focus on this thought: we want YOU to attend Oktoberfest. Here’s why:
Summer is a wonderful time. Blue skies and warm temperatures and tans and swimming. Summer can also be the opposite of a good time. What with bugs and 100-plus degree heat waves there are times that even the non-skier among us might miss winter and the beauty that it brings.
What is there to miss about winter? Glad you asked.
Close to the end of the dog days of summer many weather prediction agencies start looking towards the future and what the winter season may bring. Like many things in the ski industry, we try to take weather predictions with a grain of salt. No matter what the weatherman might predict, we always err on the side of optimism because that’s what winter sports enthusiasts do! After all, we’re the ones who decided it was FUN to be outside when the snow and temperatures are falling. Optimism is just in our nature.
Mother Nature wasn't very amusing this season. That’s OK though because we snow sports enthusiasts are really good at laughing at ourselves, each other, and the situations we often find ourselves in. Humor really is the best medicine, so here’s some to savor. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did assembling it!
(and get a head start for next season!)
What a year it has been. Mother Nature helped Titus Mountain break records… but not necessarily in a good way. This doesn’t mean, however, we don’t have hope for next season. In fact, this makes us believe that next season is going to be the most powder-filled, sun-shining, awesome season we could hope for. It’s how the law of averages works, right?
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again—skiers are a hearty breed. We take the good with the bad and keep plugging along until smiles spread across our faces when we find a powder stash. So keep you chin up and we will see you next year!
"It's never too cold in Chicago. You're just underdressed." A quote that can be attributed to Neil Steinburg, a columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, it's more than likely been muttered a few times on the ski slopes as well. Seasoned ski veterans know that cold weather brings great skiing and that proper preparation ensures a great ski day. But if you're just starting to get into the sport, starting to bring your little ones out onto the hill, or are skiing for the first time in a different area, here are some tips to stave off the cold and get some good turns in.
At Titus Mountain Family Ski Center, we have always prided ourselves on being a family friendly mountain. That means a little something for everyone, including terrain parks. We have been lucky enough to have terrain park crews that, over the past 4 years, have raised the bar for not only mountains our size, but for the industry in general.
Who doesn't love fireworks?!
China is generally-accepted as the place where it all started. It is thought that, as early as 200 B.C., the Chinese had already stumbled upon a sort of natural firecracker: They would roast bamboo, which explodes with a bang when heated due to its hollow air pockets, in order to ward off evil spirits.
Inspired by the International Olympic Games, the inaugural Empire State Games took place at Syracuse University in 1978. The competitive events mirrored those of the Olympic Summer Games and NY was the first state to organize & hold such a competition.
The Empire State Winter Games came into being not long afterwards and benefited from the marvelous facilities created in the Lake Placid area for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
One of the really special things about working here at Titus is the opportunity to watch folks who have never experienced our sport come out & try it for the first time. This is especially true when it involves youngsters!
